Rocio!

One of our youth, Rocio turned 18 this summer. She is one of the first kids to call Hogar de Esperanza home, arriving as a small child. Though she has some developmental delays, we’ve seen her grow into a lovely young lady. She is still in school, studying to get the equivalent of a GED here in Peru, and works during the week as a classroom assistant at a local preschool. She desires to return home to live with her family, but due to deplorable living conditions she wasn’t able to do so. David Miller made a visit to Hogar de Esperanza with a couple of business men and began work to improve her home. They worked to build two closed in secure rooms and a bathroom. Work continues on this project, and Rocio is still at Hogar de Esperanza, but soon she will be able to move back in with her family after almost a decade of separation.

Farewells

August and September have brought some changes in personnel in the orphanage. Oscar and Samantha Alday left at the end of August. They served for 9 months as dorm parents to our house of younger boys. The bonds they formed with those children will not be forgotten any time soon. We pray many blessings for the Alday family as they welcome their first daughter into the world this coming October. Kristy Tirado, our psychologist, has also left the orphanage. She served at the orphanage years ago as an intern during university. Now with her degree and a few years of experience under her belt she came to help again. We’re grateful for her service and wish her the best in the future.

Teachers Strike

September has proved to be an interesting month for our children. The teachers here in Peru have been on strike. There have been lots of cancelled classes and extra homework. We’ve been able to take advantage of the extra time with the kids and plan some fun activities. The volunteers have prepared art classes and done baking projects with groups of the kids. They also got to go on a super fun field trip. Please pray that the strike ends soon, so that our kids can get the most out of the rest of this school year.

“How To Help”

As in any home, we always have a list of things that need to get fixed or purchases that need to be made. Some have to wait from month to month because they’re just not in the budget. If you are interested in knowing more about our specific needs and perhaps donating to meet one of those needs, please look at our “How To Help” link or contact us at

Que Dios les bendiga,
