Volunteers!

In the months of June and July we said goodbye to some wonderful volunteers. Bryson Adolf spent a year here in with us. He served here in so many ways, and has been greatly missed. Courntey and David Busscher volunteered with us for 11 months, and have returned to the state where they will both be pursuing their master’s degrees. And lastly, but certainly not least, Michi and Nathan journeyed home after 6 month of service here. Their sweet spirits and love for the Lord left and a mark on everyone here. Hogar de Esperanza is a better place for their time of service here, and we are grateful for the sacrifices they each made to be able to serve the children here.

Futbol Season!

One of our youth was chosen to play on their school soccer team. Fernando will be a starting player on the high school soccer team. We are excited for the opportunities to learn and grow as a person that Fernando will be given as he participates in this team sport. We are proud of Fernando for being what the coach called “a key player” and for all the effort he is putting in to not only soccer, but to keeping his grades up so he can play.

Groups, Groups and More Groups!

In the months of June and July, we had three wonderful groups join us here. The first group came from Salem Fields Community Church. They spent their time here painting our girls house and doing medical checkups on all our children. It was their first visit here and we are hoping that their hearts were changed. The second group to come in June was led by volunteer Bryson Adolf. The youth group from his church, San Paul Lutheran Church, came down and gave all the volunteer quarters a much needed facelift with a fresh coat of paint. They also spent lots of time with our adolescent group here in Bible studies and fun outings. They were such a blessing to have here. Our last group of the year was Windsor Road Christian Church. They worked hard to repair our playground and build a whole new rock climbing wall for our kids to enjoy. Despite their rough travels experiences (flights delayed and robberies) they were full of energy and had great activities planned for our kids every afternoon. They also took the kids on two outings. Through them an organization named Orphan’s Treasure Box Books also donated new mattresses for 3 of our 4 houses. All three of the groups were a blessing to the staff and children and we are grateful for all their work and effort.

Struggles

June and July brought with them two hard struggles for us here in the orphanage. The first was a car accident. Our minivan was struck from behind by a trailer carrying brick and pushed in to the car in front of it. We give glory to God that no one was injured in this accident, but we are struggling to meet the transportation needs of our 30 children without this car, as it was left completely totaled. In July, while the Windsor Road Christian Church was here, we were hit with yet another difficulty. The Rancho, the building where our groups stay, was broken into and robbed. It was a traumatizing situation for the guard, his family, and the group. Again, we have only gratitude for God’s protection as no one was hurt in the incident.

Happy Independence Day Peru!

July 28th is the day Peru celebrates its independence. Here in the orphanage we had a big party to celebrate the freedom and culture of Peru. Each of the houses was assigned a region of Peru to represent – the coast, the mountains, or the jungle. The kids performed typical dances of their region and then all the invited guests sampled food from each region of Peru. Our volunteers got in on the action and prepared typical food from their regions, Australia and California, as well. It was a great time of fellowship amongst the staff, children, volunteers, and invited guest. Kristy Tirado, our psychologist, did a wonderful job planning, coordinating and hosting the event. Thank you, Kristy!
