Thank you Lisa Parmer!

At the beginning of the month we had the joy of welcoming in Lisa Parmer, who for a week shared her gift of acupuncture not only with the albergue, but also with 2 churches in the surrounding areas of Trujillo. The children and staff were timid and a little scared at first, but Lisa’s calm and loving spirit enabled everyone to give her treatments a chance. The children came out feeling brave and the adults expressed immense gratitude for the relief and relaxation. We are so grateful for her time spent here.

Medical Students from Creighton University Volunteer

In the middle of May we were blessed to have a group of medical students from Creighton University who stayed for a week. While the kids were at the school during the day, the group spent their time painting the Amigos house. The rooms are now bright and beautiful for Tia Hilda and the boys. In the afternoons they taught workshops for our kids. These workshops included information about hygiene, maintaining a healthy, drug-free lifestyle, as well as important facts and advice for the changes that come along with adolescence. They put a special focus on the importance and blessings of sexual purity in their workshops with our adolescents. At the end of the week the group and adolescents had a celebration dinner together where the youth were given the opportunity to sign a purity pledge, promising to abstain from sexual impurity until marriage. We rejoice with 6 who chose to sign this pledge and dedicate this aspect of their life to God.

Farewells and Welcomes

May also brought many changes to our volunteer team. Elizabeth, mentioned in last month’s update, went home, as did Lisa Garner. Lisa had been here for 4 months and spent her time teaching and loving on our 4 littlest in kinder and helping our social worker. We also had two short term volunteers; Meredith and Morgan Jones come for a week. Before May came to a close, Estelle O’ Toole became the newest member of our volunteer team and from day one she has been a great worker, helping anywhere she is needed. We are excited to have her here with us for the next 6 months.
